Lets turn conflict into collaboration
12 Nov 2024
ut any 2 people together at work and there is bound to be some level of conflict. Have you ever wondered what gives rise to conflict?Â
Â
No one wants to create conflict on purpose, and yet we see instances of conflict all the time. Unfortunately, conflict at the workplace can be a big drain on an individual's effectiveness and can ultimately drive down the organisation's profitability. After all, conflict can lead to a negative work environment and work not being completed.Â
Â
I am sharing 6 steps, if followed, can help you turn a negative 'conflict' into a positive 'collaboration’:Â
1. Create an environment that is accepting of ideas.Â
2. Recognise and acknowledge a conflict situation.Â
3. Determine the cause / trigger of the conflict.Â
4. Mediate between the conflicting parties, only if required.Â
5. Find common ground.Â
6. Encourage, appreciate and celebrate successes.Â
Â
The first step for any leader is to look at the work culture of the organisation. The environment within the organisation must, first and foremost, be accepting of diverse ideas and points of view. This is an essential ingredient for innovation. If this is truly happening, the remaining steps will be easier. If not, focus on step 1 and create the right work culture - not just in words, but also in action.
